Direktur Teknologi XL Axiata, I Gede Darmayusa mengatakan, “Saat ini kami sedang melaksanakan uji coba penerapan Open RAN di Ambon, Maluku. Ujicoba akan berlangsung mulai akhir November 2020 ini hingga akhir Desember 2020 nanti. Uji coba ini kami lakukan untuk memahami sejauhmana fungsi dan kapabilitas perangkat. Selain itu, kami juga ingin mengetahui sejauhmana jika diintegrasikan dengan jaringan XL Axiata yang telah ada saat ini, serta mekanisme operasional jaringannya.”
Gede menambahkan, teknologi Open RAN adalah teknologi perangkat radio akses yang mengadopsi konsep open interface, di mana operator dapat menggunakan kombinasi perangkat radio, seperti radio unit dan baseband, tanpa terikat pada salah satu merk/brand yang spesifik. Dengan konsep Open RAN ini, diharapkan dapat mendorong tumbuhnya pemain baru pada perangkat radio akses yang saat ini hanya didominasi oleh beberapa partner penyedia teknologi saja. Dengan tumbuhnya pemain pemain baru, inovasi dapat berkembang lebih cepat dan membantu menurunkan beban perangkat dan operasional yang ditanggung oleh operator.
RAN sendiri adalah bagian dari sistem telekomunikasi yang menghubungkan perangkat individual ke bagian lain jaringan melalui koneksi radio. RAN berada di antara peralatan pengguna, seperti ponsel, komputer, atau mesin apa pun yang dikendalikan dari jarak jauh, dan menyediakan koneksi dengan jaringan intinya. Dengan demikian bisa dipahami bahwa RAN merupakan komponen utama telekomunikasi nirkabel, yang saat ini telah berevolusi melalui generasi jaringan seluler menjelang 5G.
“Teknologi Open RAN menawarkan potensi dan struktur harga yang lebih bersaing. Kami memang berharap dapat memperluas jaringan dan layanan dengan biaya yang lebih sehat dan di saat yang sama tetap bisa memberikan kualitas layanan yang bagus bagi pelanggan. Dengan efisiensi beban biaya di sisi operator, kami akan bisa secara terus memperluas jaringan untuk bisa menjangkau masyarakat yang lebih luas, bahkan untuk area area di pelosok seperti Kawasan Timur Indonesia ini,” lanjut Gede.
Menurut Gede, saat ini tim XL Axiata di Ambon sedang menyiapkan instalasi guna keperluan uji coba ini. Semua perangkat yang diperlukan juga telah sampai di lokasi. Persiapan dan uji coba akan memakan waktu sekitar satu bulan, hingga nanti siap untuk dilakukan first call melalui jaringan Open RAN tersebut dari lokasi di Ambon ke Jakarta. Setelah tahap uji coba tersebut, selanjutnya XL Axiata akan melangkah ke tahap selanjutnya berupa pilot project dengan menempatkan Open RAN di sekitar 100 titik lokasi yang sebagian besar berada di luar Jawa dan di area pelosok.

Dalam rangka penerapan teknologi Open RAN tersebut, XL Axiata juga bergabung ke dalam Komunitas Lab Open RAN. Menurut Gede komunitas tersebut beranggotakan Telecom Infra Project (TIP), GSMA, Pemerintah Indonesia, Universitas Telkom dan Operator seluler, dan bertujuan untuk menumbuhkan talenta digital dan ekosistem telekomunikasi yang kuat dan beragam, serta mendorong digitalisasi dan pertumbuhan ekonomi di Indonesia. Komunitas ini diinisiasi oleh Pemerintah Indonesia dan Telecom Infra Project (TIP) & GSMA sebagai bentuk dukungan atas aspirasi pemerintah.
